Ghostfacers

Oh, Corbett. I loved his big gay smile, and I need an icon that says "I love my dead gay intern" stat! But I'm really tired of seeing the gays die. I was also a little frustrated with the way they handled the whole homosexuality thing in the episode. It seemed like they were trying to make up for the gay jokes in previous episodes, but I'm not sure whether it worked or not. Corbett's homosexuality seemed to be a joke most of the time. I mean, the end was very emotionally wrenching, and SamandDean seemed pissed that Ed and Harry had exploited it for their own means. But on the other hand, for most of the show Corbett's love for Ed was depicted as ridiculous.

Corbett's love for Ed in the first place was a little shaky. I don't want to sound like a snob, but I also don't understand how Corbett could have fallen for a frumpy, scruffy, self-centered, homophobic guy like that. Aesthetics vary, and aren't everything anyway, but I'm tired of the stereotype that because gay men like men, they'll go for any man. I've found that the most homophobic guys are the ones most gay men would never, ever go for. Even with that issue aside, Corbett's feelings are never really validated. Corbett faces his murderer for Ed's sake (he looked so vulnerable when he asked what was going on!) and Ed and Harry didn't learn from it at all. When they're watching his death echo choke on his own blood, and Ed decides to go ask this huge favor of him, Harry only says: "You have to go be gay for that intern."

Ed and Harry came off as extremely self-serving in this episode. In the first episode we saw them in, they were dinkuses, but they seemed to have their heart in the right place. At the very least they didn't hurt anybody. But Corbett died because of them, and instead of waking up they used his death for their own interests. I used to think of them as funny, ridiculous characters, but now I really hate them.

I also noticed that once the show got the bleep feature for profanity the boys swore like sailors. I've always found it lame that Dean said "fudge" and "freakin'," and appreciated seeing them swear like normal twenty-something guys. It'll be really hard to go back to the regular episodes.

Dean was on fire whenever he looked at the camera. I loved how he almost spilled the beans to Spruce, and then was like "fuck it." No chick flick moments!

This episode didn't focus on Sam and Dean as much as I would have liked. They're the prettiest, after all (OMG CHISEL CHEST!), and why I watch the show. Even if it didn't allow for much SamandDean time, though, the style of the episode was still pretty cool. It reminded me of Cloverfield, and was definitely the scariest episode I've seen. It reminded me of a theme I really like in fanfic, where we see Sam and Dean from an outsider's perspective. To Ed and Harry, Sam and Dean are jealous hicks with too many muscles. Or at least that's what they tell themselves.

I can't wait for season 3 to come out on DVD since I haven't seen any of it yet. I'm totally in Winchester withdrawal right now. *cries*

I didn't realize how much I needed it until I watched this episode, which left me high for hours even though it was way light on SamandDean screentime.

I saw this through friendfriends looking for SPN reviews. Hi. :)

I agree with *all* of that. x100 I was amazed seeing all the glowing reviews of this ep on my flist, which is why I went looking. I enjoyed all the stuff you did, but mostly the treatment of Corbett and the way Ed and Harry came off left me with a bad taste in my mouth.

So he DID say 'chisel chest'? That's awesome! I couldn't really hear him at the time.

I don't know what it says about me that my heart fluttered when I heard the boys cussing. I LOVED it. I don't want to go back to normal, either. Oh, if only this show could be on Showtime. ...wait, forget the cussing, there are lots better reasons for it be on Showtime. Why is the 'Queer as Folk' theme popping into my head?

My favorite part of the episode, though--Sam in his party hat. I was sad to see it knocked off his head. I was hoping they'd make good their escape and ten minutes of frantic panting and ghostchasing later Dean'd take a good look at him and be all, "Dude, are you wearing a party hat?"

sorry, stranger, I'm rambling all over you. Mind if I friend you, though? This review was perfect.

Yay! Please do friend away (and I'll friend in return) and feel free to ramble anytime. I've been posting my reviews mostly to empty space so far, since my flist isn't really into SPN, and I would love to get more opinions.

The Corbett thing just felt so iffy to me. On the one hand, it's great that they had a gay character who wasn't insane or predatory or anything. And the show on the whole seemed to think his feelings were valid, since Sam and Dean thought it was fine. But it also felt like a joke a lot of the time, and Ed and Harry's treatment of it was just bizarre.

Oh yeah, the party hat was hilarious. Sam's tired martyr face when he put it on was perfect. He may be kidnapped by a psychotic ghost and be forced to watch his friend die, but the party hat is just too much! He also must be, like, 6'8" with that thing on, too.

That's exactly it. It wasn't even that they killed him, though that was my first reaction in my journal ('cause as soon as I knew he was gay he might as well have had a bullseye on his back).

Ed sounded sincere when he said he 'really, truly' loved Corbett, but you knew why he was saying it and that he wanted Corbett to hear it as 'I love you like you love me.' I didn't like the implications of that at all. Like the only way to get through to Corbett was to hear his gay love validated? Like it wasn't good enough that his friends cared about him and needed his help?

And then once Corbett hears him Ed right away asks Corbett to save them, no 'I'm sorry you died' or 'we'll always remember you.' Because of course the gay one's only there to serve a purpose. Like an oven mitt.

But that's all aside from me thinking that Ed was not good enough to be crushed over by someone as adorable as Corbett. What made me dislike Ed immediately was when Harry was talking about his sister and Ed interrupts, "It's adopted sister, thank you very much." The look on Maggie's face looked so stunned and hurt. And right after her caption read under her name, "RESEARCH TEAM., ADOPTED" She's non-white, see, it must be acknowledged!

Heh. I can imagine Sam trying to get through a doorway with the party hat on and it's so high up it hits the door frame and pops off his head.

Exactly! He loves this guy who totally doesn't deserve him, and then uses him after getting him killed. I was almost okay with it, because Ed was crying when he said he loved Corbett, and clearly seemed moved, but then it was all ruined when he exploited his death and basically forgot about him. Ugh.

Guh. I was really frustrated with this episode. Like yeah it had some good one liners, but it wasn't up to the usual Supernatural standard, what with the lack of Sam and Dean and all. Not to mention the whole Corbett part, which I totally agree with you on. And Ed/Harry were way to idiotic. Nobody's actually that stupid. This episode had a similar feel as when the sidekick comic relief characters in Disney movies get their own movie. Just stupid and over the top.

"John Winchester has hot gay love for Dean Winchester."

Oh man, that would be wonderful!

Yeah, word. Ed and Harry are good as sidekicks, where they don't have to make big emotional decisions.

Wincest freak! ::casts stones::
